MSNBC’s Kristen Welker said that Oprah Winfrey’s campaigning for Stacey Abrams, the Democratic nominee for governor in Georgia, on Thursday will raise questions about whether the former talk show host has opened the door to possibly running for president in 2020.

“Oprah does a couple of things for this race: one, she’s here to energize the voters, she’s here, at this pivotal time amid concerns about voter suppression,” Welker told MSNBC’s, Andrea Mitchell. “She’s significant also, Andrea, because she really doesn’t get into politics a lot.”

“This is really her first major endorsement of the 20188 midterm elections. This is going to be very significant, it’s going to make a splash, and it’s going to raise new questions about her own potential political prospects,” Welker said. “There’s been a lot of buzz about whether Oprah Winfrey would throw her hat in the ring in 2020.”

Welker highlighted Oprah’s speech at the Golden Globes, which caused speculation that Oprah might run for president. However, Welker pointed out that Oprah has said that she is not interested in running for president in 2020.

“But a New York Times profile that came out [on] her best friend Gayle King yesterday said that King’s been pushing her to do it, Andrea. That King’s been trying to get her back in this race, trying the make the argument that this is a whole lot bigger than just Oprah Winfrey and her own desires,” Welker said.
