MSNBC’s First Question to O’Rourke: Where Is Your Minivan From?

"The question, congressman, is where is the rental car from?" Hillyard asked O'Rourke

MSNBC caught up with former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), who officially entered the Democratic presidential primary on Wednesday, and the network’s first question to the presidential hopeful was not exactly hard-hitting.

MSNBC’s Vaughn Hillyard was outside a high school in Ft. Madison, Iowa waiting for O’Rourke to arrive at his second official presidential campaign event. MSNBC’s camera zoomed in on O’Rourke in his Dodge Caravan, while he looked for a parking spot.

“We didn’t intend to creep on O’Rourke in his minivan, but that’s what we’re doing here,” MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson, watching from Washington, D.C., said as O’Rourke’s van pulled in.

Jackson added that she hoped Hillyard would be able to ask O’Rourke a couple of questions before his second campaign event.

“Vaughn, do we know how the minivan got to Iowa, if it’s a rental he acquired there or if this is sort of the O’Rourke family minivan that has now been moved to Iowa for campaign purposes?” MSNBC contributor and Daily Beast reporter Betsy Woodruff asked Hillyard.

Hillyard commented that the minivan looked like it was from Illinois.

“The question, congressman, is where is the rental car from?” Hillyard asked O’Rourke.

“Picked it up in the Des Moines airport,” O’Rourke responded.

MSNBC will be hosting the first Democratic primary debate this summer. Hopefully the questions directed at the presidential candidates will be a bit harder-hitting at that forum.
