Special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe has cost taxpayers $3.2 million in its first four-and-a-half months, according to a report the Justice Department released on Tuesday.

The $3.2 million spent by Mueller far exceeds what taxpayers spent on the Select Committee on Benghazi investigation during its first year, and Mueller’s Russia probe also appears to be on pace to far exceed what was spent on the entirety of the Benghazi investigating.

The Washington Post reported that the Select Committee on Benghazi spent $6.77 million in taxpayer funds through May of 2016.

This $6.77 million was also spent during a period that stretched roughly two and half years according to the Washington Post’s fact-checkers.

Democrats on the Select Committee on Benghazi’s frequently blasted the Benghazi investigation as a waste of taxpayer funds.

Now, Mueller’s Russia probe, which has drawn criticism President Trump as nothing more than a politically driven “witchhunt,” is on pace to exceed the $6.77 million that was spent investigating Benghazi in its first year alone.

Politico reported on the cost of Mueller’s probe, on Tuesday:

“Special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe cost $3.2 million in its first four-and-a-half months, the Justice Department said in a report released Tuesday.”

“The spending totals include $1.7 million for salaries and benefits, though $1.2 million of that total accounts for Justice employees who have been detailed to the Mueller probe, which is examining ties between Moscow and President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.”

Mueller has spent roughly $711,111 per month, meaning that over the course of a year, Mueller’s probe would cost the American taxpayers more than $8.5 million, about $1.73 million more than the Benghazi investigation.
