Nadler: A Partisan Impeachment of Trump Will Tear the Country Apart

"You can commit crimes which are not impeachable offenses, you can commit impeachable offenses which are not crimes."

Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) said that Democrats should not pursue a partisan impeachment of President Trump, because it will tear the country apart, during an interview with MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Monday.

The Atlantic‘s Natasha Bertrand asked Nadler about what his reaction would be if Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation found that President Trump had committed crimes that were also impeachable offenses.

“Crimes and impeachable offenses are different things and they are subject to different tests,” Nadler said. “You can commit crimes which are not impeachable offenses, you can commit impeachable offenses which are not crimes.”

Nadler will likely take over as chairman of the House Judiciary Committee next Congress. Articles of impeachment against Trump would come from that committee if Democrats decide to go down that path.

“If Mueller shows us that the president has committed impeachable offenses we’ll have to make judgments as to how serious those impeachable offenses are, and whether we should undertake an impeachment,” Nadler told “Morning Joe.”

Nadler added that Congress has “to be reluctant to do an impeachment,” because it will divide the country.

“You don’t want to tear the country apart. You don’t want half the country to say to the other half for next 30 years, ‘we won the election, you stole it from us,'” Nadler said.
