House Judiciary Committee Chair Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) omitted the phrase “So help me God,” while swearing in witnesses at a hearing on gun violence prevention on Wednesday and was forced to readminister the oath after Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) pointed it out to him.

“We welcome all of our distinguished witnesses and thank them for participating in today’s hearing. Now if you would please rise, and I will begin by swearing you in,” Nadler said.

“Raise your right hands. Do you swear or affirm under penalty of perjury that the testimony you’re about to give is true and correct to the best of your knowledge, information, and belief?” Nadler asked. “Thank you. Let the record show the witnesses answered in the affirmative.”

“Mr. Chairman, point of parliamentary inquiry,” Johnson interjected. “We had a conversation on the floor last week, and I just noted you left out ‘So help me God.'”

“I’m sorry,” Nadler said before asking Johnson if he wanted him to repeat the whole process.

“I would love that. Thank you,” Johnson replied.

Nadler then repeated swearing in the witnesses, this time including the phrase, ‘So help me God.’

Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee recently proposed eliminating “So help me God” from that committee’s oath, but Republican and Democratic members voted down the proposal.
