House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) stepped up her rhetoric regarding the GOP tax bill Tuesday, calling it “unpatriotic’ during a town hall in Arizona.

“We could have, as we’ve done before, written a tax bill in a bipartisan way that had transparency that people could see what it was about,” Pelosi said about the GOP tax bill.

Pelosi said that instead, Republicans passed the GOP tax bill in the dead of night so that America people would not know about the legislation, allowing Republicans to “pin a rose on it,” as she described it.

“If what you’re doing is cutting the taxes at the high end and therefore not being allowed to invest in the future, you’re doing a grave disservice to our country,” Pelosi said.

A participant at the town hall interjected that it was unpatriotic.

“It’s unpatriotic,” Pelosi agreed. “I wish we could have come together to do a fair tax bill, but it is about our country.”

Pelosi then said that the GOP tax bill was “undermining” American democracy.

“So, a budget, again, [is] a statement of values, it’s about conscience, it’s about justice. That’s not what this budget or tax plan is about,” Pelosi concluded.

Pelosi’s “unpatriotic” claim about the GOP tax bill is somewhat similar to comments President Trump made regarding Democrats who refused to stand during his State of the Union.

Trump called Democrats “un-American” and “treasonous,” for failing to stand and applaud his economic policies during the State of the Union. These comments, delievered tongue-in-cheek according to the White House, were denounced by Democrats including Pelosi.

Previously Pelosi had called the bonuses, pay raises, or increased benefits that more than 300 companies have given out because of the GOP tax bill as “crumbs” and “pathetic.”

This is despite recent polling conducted by the New York Times, which showed a majority of Americans approve of the GOP tax bill.
