Nationwide Campaign Kicks Off as Health Tax Looms

Now that the dust has settled from Tuesday’s midterm election, one group is calling on Republicans in Congress to take advantage of their small window before handing off the House to the Democrats.

There are a few issues Congress can still address during the lame duck, including the Health Insurance Tax (HIT), which is getting a renewed wave of attention as opponents call for its delay.

The Stop the HIT Coalition has kicked off a nationwide campaign this month “to mobilize small businesses and their employees in support of continued suspension of the tax through 2020.” The 2020 HIT effectively raises premiums for 142 million Americans. It has previously been delayed, and the coalition is calling on Congress to delay it again before it takes effect.

The coalition argues that delaying HIT will save “nearly $480 on average for families employed by a small business in 2020. Seniors enrolled in Medicare Advantage would also benefit from a HIT suspension by saving more than $240 on average on their premiums.”

Two legislative vehicles include H.R.5963 in the House, and S.3063 in the Senate. They are bills to watch on this issue in the coming weeks.
