NBC broke the news on Thursday that federal law enforcement wiretapped the phones of President Trump’s personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, intercepting a call between the White House and his attorney.

According to the report, the wiretap “was in place in the weeks leading up to the raids on Cohen’s offices, hotel room, and home in early April.”

NBC reported:

Federal investigators have wiretapped the phone lines of Michael Cohen, the longtime personal lawyer for President Donald Trump who is under investigation for a payment he made to an adult film star who alleged she had an affair with Trump, according to two people with knowledge of the legal proceedings involving Cohen.

At least one phone call between a phone line associated with Cohen and the White House was intercepted, the person said.

Trump reportedly called Cohen after the raid, but it’s not clear what they discussed.

The report echoes accusations that the president hurled at President Obama in early 2017:

NBC did not report that Obama’s Justice Department was listening in on Cohen’s calls, failing to establish a specific timeline of the wiretap.

But Trump’s broader anxiety about federal wiretaps seems to be justified.

UPDATE: NBC issued this correction.
