NBC finds itself once again mired in its own sexual harassment filth, with reports from The Daily Beast accusing the network of trying to cover for disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein.

According to the Beast, NBC’s lawyers threatened reporter Ronan Farrow with a “smear” campaign if Farrow continued to report on Weinstein’s sexual misconduct. The network denies the allegations, but sources told the Beast’s Max Tani and Lachlan Cartwright that NBC killed a story on Weinstein and tried to keep it dead:

According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, NBC News General Counsel Susan Weiner made a series of phone calls to Farrow, threatening to smear him if he continued to report on Weinstein.

In spring 2017, according to the sources, Farrow played [NBC News President Noah] Oppenheim the audio of Weinstein with Battilana admitting that he was “used to” groping women’s breasts. At one point during their meeting, according to sources, Oppenheim had asked if people still cared about Weinstein.

It’s not clear what sparked NBC’s aversion to publishing the truth on Weinstein, but a potentially professional relationship between Oppenheimer and the film producer could have stopped the story at the network.

NBC is developing quite the history in defending sexual perverts. It took years for the network to oust disgraced anchor Matt Lauer over sexual harassment allegations, and NBC only took that step when the allegations became public.
