NBC found itself in another sexual misconduct scandal over the weekend when Amber Athey of The Daily Caller reported that the network quietly reprimanded host Chris Matthews for sexual harassment in 1998.

The liberal commentator made one woman so uncomfortable that NBC payed the woman a $40,000 settlement for her claims:

Two sources familiar with the situation told The Daily Caller that Matthews paid $40,000 to settle with an assistant producer on his show, “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” in 1999 after she accused him of harassment. An MSNBC spokesperson contested that claim to the Caller, saying the company instead paid significantly less as part of a severance package.

The woman complained to CNBC executives about Matthews making inappropriate comments and jokes about her while in the company of others.

However, the network did not find the allegations serious enough to boot Matthews from the air, and they only “reprimanded” the anchor, according to Athey.

Matthews is only the latest figure at NBC’s news networks to face the #MeToo movement. NBC host Matt Lauer left the organization last month in the wake of many disturbing sexual misconduct allegations, and on-air contributor Mark Halperin faced sexual harassment accusations from multiple women.
