Nelson Admits There’s No Proof Russia Penetrated FL’s Voter Registration System in 2018

"So, we said it would be foolish to think that if they were in the election records in 2016 that they are not continuing."

Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) admitted that when he said Russian operatives had “penetrated” some of Florida’s voter registration systems last week he had no proof of this and was simply just making an assumption at a recent campaign event.

CNN reported last week:

“Florida Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson, who’s up for re-election this year in a state President Donald Trump won in 2016, said Russians have “penetrated” some of his state’s voter registration systems ahead of the 2018 midterms.”

“They have already penetrated certain counties in the state and they now have free rein to move about,” he told the Tampa Bay Times before a campaign event in Tampa”

However, the Republican National Committee (RNC) posted a video on their YouTube channel of Nelson, who was “unaware he was being filmed,” admitting he had no proof that Russia had “penetrated” some of Florida’s voter registration systems on Wednesday.

“What I said last week is exactly what the letter states,” Nelson said, referring to a letter he wrote in July with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL).

“So, we said it would be foolish to think that if [the Russians] were in the election records in 2016 that they are not continuing,” Nelson said.

Nelson then told the audience that certain political figures have taken his comments and attempted to politicize them.

“What they’re going to do is try to find, I’d assume, a swing county,” Nelson said about the Russians plans in 2018, and “then just go in and alter some of the records, eliminate some of the voters from the file.”

At this point Nelson realized he was being filmed and the video ends.
