Nelson in Serious Trouble? Another Poll Shows Scott With Lead

The second poll in as many days shows Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) leading incumbent Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), according to results released by the St. Leo University Polling Institute.

Sunshine State News reported that Scott led Nelson 40-34 among Florida voters. Another eight percent went to other candidates, and 18 percent said they were still undecided.

The Institute’s polling director said Nelson could be in real trouble, given that Scott has led in numerous St. Leo polls to date.

Frank Orlando, the director of the Saint Leo University Polling Institute and a political scientist at that university, said the Democrat could be in trouble especially as his organization’s polls have consistently shown Scott ahead.

“Governor Scott has consistently held an advantage over Senator Nelson in our polling, so the concern from Democrats nationally about losing in Florida is justified,” Orlando said on Tuesday. “Governor Scott has maintained his popularity over the past year, which makes him a formidable opponent for Nelson.”

Another poll released this week showed Scott leading Nelson by just one point, but Scott led Nelson in one key demographic: older Floridians. Among voters aged 50 and older, Scott led Nelson by nine points. Given Florida’s large retired population, that could give Scott an important advantage in the fall.
