New Book: Clinton Campaign Explicitly Supported Trump in Primaries

According to a new book from New York Times reporter Amy Chozick, the Hillary Clinton campaign made earnest efforts to bolster the candidacy of Donald Trump during the 2016 GOP primaries.

The Clinton campaign never thought that Trump would be the nominee, according to a review in The Daily Beast, so they tried to use him to discredit the other Republicans in the field.

According to the Daily Beast, Chozick reports that the Clinton campaign even held strategy meetings with the purpose of backing Trump:

From early on, the Clinton camp saw Trump as an enemy to encourage, Chozick writes. During the campaign, as had been previously reported, there was an effort to elevate Trump into a so-called Pied Piper in order to tie him to the mainstream of the Republican Party.

“An agenda for an upcoming campaign meeting sent by [Campaign Manager] Robby Mook’s office asked, ‘How do we maximize Trump?’” Chozick writes, describing a time when the GOP primary was still crowded.

The campaign even found the candidate funny, glued to his every word. According to one passage, campaign manger Robby Mook silenced a room during the GOP debate to watch Trump’s performance. “‘Shhhhh,’ Robby said, practically pressing his nose up to the TV. ‘I’ve gahtz to get me some Trump,’” Chozick wrote.

Clinton’s camp thought that Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) or Gov. John Kasich (R-OH) would win the GOP nomination.
