New Dem Demand: We’ll Shut Down the Government if You Do Anything to Obamacare

New Dem Demand: We’ll Shut Down the Government if You Do Anything to Obamacare

As Republicans work to keep the government open before a Friday night deadline, Democrats have thrown a new wrench in the process: a pledge to vote against funding the government if the GOP even tries to repeal and replace Obamacare this weekend.

The latest Democratic act of brinksmanship comes from House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA):

“If Republicans pursue this partisan path of forcing Americans to pay more for less and destabilizing our county’s health care system — without even knowing how much their bill will cost — Republicans should be prepared to pass a one-week [funding extension] on their own,” House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer of Maryland said in a statement.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi delivered the news in a phone call to House Speaker Paul Ryan Thursday morning. Hoyer had a similar conversation with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California.

While the House GOP can pass a government funding bill without House Democrats, the Senate GOP cannot do so without Senate Democrats, because the Senate needs to pass a continuing resolution (CR) with 60 votes.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was noncommittal on Thursday about Senate Democrats’ willingness to bring the government to the brink of a shutdown:

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Thursday declined to say whether Senate Democrats would side with House Democratic leadership and vote against a spending bill if Republicans push for a vote to repeal Obamacare this week.

The New York Democrat said that while he agrees with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer that a government spending bill should come through before a healthcare bill, he wasn’t ready to tell his members to vote against a spending measure.

Schumer’s non-answer would hardly be considered a profile in courage. It remains to be seen whether Democrats will shut down the government in order to simply prevent a vote on Obamacare repeal. Either way, Americans will find out in the next 48 hours.
