New House Judiciary Lawyer Has Been Calling for Trump’s Impeachment Since 2016

In what is possibly an indication of where Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee hopes Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation will lead, they announced Tuesday that they hired an attorney who has been calling for Trump’s impeachment since before he was sworn in.

The New York Times reported that the committee hired Norman Eisen, who has been a vocal critic of Trump in his role as the chairman of the board of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW).

While House Judiciary Committee Chair Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) has shied away from questions about whether House Democrats will pursue impeaching Trump, Eisen has been calling for Trump’s impeachment almost immediately after he won the 2016 election.

“Love it! purchasing an inauguration package entitles you to a discounted stay in event [of] future impeachment proceedings ;-),” Eisen tweeted in December 2016.

Eisen was responding to another Twitter user who had suggested that D.C. hotels offer a special two-for-one deal for Trump’s inauguration and impeachment.

Eisen has also stated his belief that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation will result in the eventual impeachment of Trump.

In January of 2018, Eisen tweeted that about an upcoming interview with CNN regarding Trump’s desire, at the time, to testify under oath.

“It will be interesting to hear your take on this. All things considered, I don’t think this is a smart idea,” Vox’s Shermichael Singleton tweeted at Eisen.

“The problem is that Mueller can subpoena him. I had a little card I used to give my clients to read to assert their fifth amendment right, but it’s pretty tough for the president of the United States to Take the fifth. All options are fraught with risk for the president,” Eisen replied.

Singleton the asked Eisen, “If there are inaccuracies in his statements, what would be the next steps for the special counsel?”

“Most likely: impeachment referral to Congress. Indictment is complex b/c DOJ says cant indict sitting prez. IMO That is wrong as matter of law but Mueller is a DOJ employee…” Eisen responded.

This conversation is notable, as Eisen will be consulting on matters “related to the Department of Justice, including the department’s review of Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation,” according to Nadler.

Eisen has also argued in a YouTube video dated August 2018 that if Trump were to issue pardons that themselves amounted to the obstruction of justice, it could result in impeachment.

In 2018, Eisen co-authored a thinkpiece for Brookings, which made the case for impeaching or indicting Trump for obstruction of justice.

Eisen clearly already has a bias toward impeaching Trump. Does this hire indicate Judiciary Committee Democrats are eager to begin the conversation about impeachment?
