New Jersey GOP Candidate Receives Letter Threatening His Children

New Jersey Republican Jay Webber received a threatening letter and a cut-up campaign sign at his business address, according to a Wednesday tweet.

The letter specifically mentions Webber’s children, which is where Webber says he draws the line. The Hill has more on what the letter said:

“What the f— is wrong with you… you scumbag?” the letter reads. “You BETTER hope that you don’t win! Or else. How many kids do you have… 7? Unlucky 7.”

“This is what we think of you. Time to get out of politics!”

It’s not clear when Webber received the threatening letter, but he stated he immediately contacted law enforcement to look into the matter.

Webber is running in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District to replace the retiring Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ). Webber’s Democrat opponent, Mikie Sherrill, condemned the letter.

“This is absolutely appalling. No one who decides to run for public office should feel that, by doing so, they are putting their family in danger,” Sherrill said. “I condemn this in the strongest terms and hope law enforcement determines who was behind this and holds them accountable.”

Recent polling has shown Sherrill slightly ahead, and the Cook Political Report rates the race “Lean Democratic.”
