New Op-Ed Blasts Oregon Cap and Trade for Giving ‘Unelected Bureaucrats’ Power, Raising Taxes

Timm Slater, executive director of Oregon’s Bay Area Chamber of Commerce, is out with a new op-ed slamming the impact of a proposed cap-and-trade bill in the state.

Slater wrote in Coos Bay World:

1) The cap and trade proposal gives unelected bureaucrats at the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality the authority to raise the emissions tax without a vote of the Legislature. Then, it gives the tax revenue – a projected $700 million every year – over to a panel of special interests to spend with minimal oversight.

2) Based on the initial tax rate being discussed, it will immediately drive up the cost of gas by $.16 per gallon. Over time, a family’s cost of living will increase by as much as $50 to $125 per month, depending on where they live.

Slater also offered three other reasons why cap and trade is bad for Oregon:

  • It will drive jobs away from the state
  • Oregon is already a low greenhouse-gas emitter
  • Oregon should give existing laws to limit carbon emissions “a chance to work”

It’s just the latest op-ed calling out the cap-and-trade proposal in Oregon. Last week, Oregon Farm Bureau leader Barry Bushue wrote the proposed bill will hurt Oregon’s 300,000-strong agricultural community.
