Mitch Landrieu, the Democratic mayor of New Orleans, said on Wednesday that he doubts that he will run for president in 2020, despite considerable speculation that he will.

MSNBC’s Willie Geist asked Landrieu about the speculation surrounding him running for president in 2020, and then asked the New Orleans mayor what he thinks about the division that exists in America.

“I think my response is going to surprise you. We see the dysfunction in Washington,” Landrieu said. “There’s this kind of weird, you know, disconnect that’s going on from Washington and the rest of the world.”

“I just think in this country we have to face the fact that we don’t resolve conflict well, and I think that’s why the public is frustrated, because the answers seem to be fairly easy,” Landrieu added.

Geist followed up by asking Landrieu directly if he will run for president in 2020.

“I’m going to take a breath. I can hear the noise about the presidential candidates,” Landrieu said. “Although you never say never in politics, it’s really not something that I can foresee at the moment. The world could change dramatically, but I kind of doubt it.”
