New Poll Shows Keith Ellison in Big Trouble

A new poll released by the Star Tribune/MPR News Minnesota found that Democratic National Committee (DNC) Vice Chair and Democratic nominee for attorney general of Minnesota, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), is trailing his Republican opponent, state Rep. Doug Wardlow (R-MN), by seven points.

According to the poll, which was released on Monday, “Wardlow now leads by 7 percentage points, at 43 percent to 36 percent for Ellison, just a month after the Democrat held a 5-point edge in a September Minnesota Poll.”

The poll found that Wardlow had extended his 5-point lead from last month’s poll in Twin Cities counties, except for Hennepin and Ramsey, to a 24-point lead.

What might be most surprising is that the percentage of voters back Wardlow aged 18 to 34 nearly doubled from last month’s poll.

Wardlow has also closed in on Ellison’s 16-point lead with women voters from last month’s poll. Now Wardlow trails Ellison among women by just one point.

The poll comes after a rough stretch for Ellison, who has struggled to address allegations of domestic abuse by his ex-girlfriend, Karen Monahan.

About a third of the likely voters polled said that they did believe Monahan’s allegations, while “half of the poll participants said they were not sure whether they believe” Monahan’s allegations. Only 13 percent of Democrats polled said they believed Monahan’s allegations.

Minnesotans also expressed concern that Ellison would use the position of attorney general to file “endless lawsuits” against President Trump, which would cost the state millions.
