New Poll Shows Manchin in Trouble if He Opposes Kavanaugh

A new poll in the West Virginia Senate race is turning heads Thursday: Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) is leading state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey (R-WV) by about 10 points, but the more interesting statistic involves a follow-up question asked about Manchin’s upcoming vote on President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

West Virginia voters, according to a poll released by the Trafalgar Group Thursday morning, were asked which candidate they are likely to vote for in the 2018 Senate midterm. Then they were asked to say who they would vote for if Manchin votes against Kavanaugh’s confirmation. The results show a completely different race.

If Joe Manchin votes against Kavanaugh:

46.5% Joe Manchin (D)
44.6% Patrick Morrisey (R)
2.3% Rusty Hollen (L)
6.7% Undecided

The poll clearly demonstrates that West Virginia voters are tying their vote for or against Manchin to his vote for or against Kavanaugh. In theory, that should make the decision for Manchin easy, but he risks further alienating himself in Washington, D.C. if he backs another one of Trump’s nominees.

During an interview earlier this month, Manchin said Kavanaugh “has all the right qualities” for a Supreme Court justice.

The Trafalgar Group poll was conducted July 13 – 26 among 1,158 West Virginia voters. It has a margin of error of 2.88 percentage points.
