New Poll Shows Sanders Leading the 2020 Dem Primary

A new Emerson poll released on Monday that included 20 Democratic candidates for president showed Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) atop the crowded Democratic field.

According to the poll, 29 percent of Democratic primary voters said they supported Sanders, followed by former Vice President Joe Biden, who has not formally declared whether he is running for president, at 24 percent.

“Biden has seen his support drop. In February, he led Sanders 27% to 17%, and in March the two were tied at 26%. Now, Sanders has a 5-point lead, 29% to 24%,” said Spencer Kimball, director of Emerson Polling.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN) came is third with 9 percent, followed by Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) with 8 percent and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) at 7 percent.

“While still early in the nominating process, it looks like Mayor Pete is the candidate capturing voters’ imagination; the numbers had him at 0% in mid-February, 3% in March and now at 9% in April,” Kimball noted.

According to the Emerson poll:

“If Joe Biden decides not to run, Bernie Sanders looks to be the early beneficiary, picking up 31% of Bidens’ voters. Mayor Pete Buttigieg gets 17% of the Biden vote, followed by Beto O’Rourke at 13%.”

The poll also found that President Trump’s approval numbers nationally have stayed consistent at 43 percent approving of Trump and 49 percent disapproving.

In hypothetical 2020 match-ups, however, only Biden beats Trump outside of poll’s +/-3.2 percent margin of error.
