New Poll Spells Trouble for Democrat Chances Of Retaking Congress in 2018

A new IBD/TIPP poll released Thursday spells trouble for Democrats’ hopes of retaking the House following the 2018 midterm elections.

According to the poll, registered voters prefer that Democrats control Congress over Republicans by just two points, which is down from the 11-point margin Democrats held last month.

Earlier this year, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said that if House Republicans can stay within six points of House Democrats on a generic ballot then Republicans will keep control of the House.

If the IBD/TIPP poll results are accurate and McCarthy is correct, then it would appear that Republicans have a good chance of retaining control of Congress.

The IBD/TIPP poll also found that “Republican support for the current GOP-controlled Congress has risen from 86 percent last month to a current 92 percent approval rating,” and showed President Trump’s favorability “rose slightly.”

The president of TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence, the firm that conducts the IBD/TIPP poll, credited the Kavanaugh hearings for galvanizing “Republicans who saw the proceedings as a ploy by the Democrats to slow the nomination process.”
