New Poll: Voter Confidence in Trump Over N. Korea Rising to New Highs

A new Politico/Morning Consult poll gives the president higher-than-ever marks for his handling of the sensitive North Korea situation, just weeks away from a planned summit between Trump and Kim Jong-un that is now in question.

Politico‘s Steven Shepard wrote:

A combined 50 percent of voters have either “a lot” or “some” confidence in Trump to handle North Korea, the poll shows. That is a slight increase from last month, when 47 percent had some measure of confidence in Trump.

There has been a steady increase in the percentage of voters who have a lot of confidence in Trump: from 24 percent in March, to 28 percent in April, to 31 percent in the new poll. At the same time, the percentage of voters who say they have “no confidence at all” in Trump ticked down — from 34 percent last month, to 30 percent in the new survey.

Of course, the planned meeting could be canceled at any moment, and U.S.-North Korea relations seem to change every day.

On Tuesday, Kim threatened to cancel the summit, planned for June 12 in Singapore, over joint military exercises between U.S. and South Korean forces. The exercises have long been in the works, and Kim knows this, leading some to believe the North Korean leader is simply seeking more leverage over Trump.

A major test of whether the Trump-Kim summit will go forward will occur in about a week. From May 23 through May 25, North Korea is scheduled to destroy its Punggye-ri nuclear test site, possibly in front of reporters.
