NEW POLLS: These 5 Senate Dems Are in Big Trouble

The 2018 race to control the U.S. Senate hinges largely on 10 states in which Democrats are running for re-election but Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton in 2016.

New polling from Axios indicates that in half of those states, those Democrats would lose if the election were held today.

All five Democrats earn 47 percent of the vote or less. In four of the worst five states for Democrats, Axios and SurveyMonkey polled the Democrat against a generic Republican. For one Democrat (Claire McCaskill), Axios polled against her likely opponent, Attorney General Josh Hawley (R-MO).

Here were those first five results:

  • Montana: Republican 55%, Sen. Jon Tester 42% (R +13)
  • West Virginia: Republican 52%, Sen. Joe Manchin 43% (R +9)
  • Missouri: Hawley 52%, Sen. Claire McCaskill 44% (R +8)
  • Indiana: Republican 51%, Sen. Joe Donnelly 45% (R +6)
  • North Dakota: Republican 49%, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp 47% (R +2)

Each of those first five Democrats have been hounded by bad headlines in 2017 and 2018.

  • Tester had to watch a Republican win a statewide House race in May (Montana only has an at-large seat in the House) despite national controversy around the Republican
  • Manchin took heat for the recent teachers’ strike in West Virginia, over cuts made during his time as governor
  • McCaskill’s wealth and career-politician status have been frequent points of contention in her Senate race
  • Donnelly has earned criticism from his outsourcing hypocrisy and his awkward efforts to praise President Trump
  • Heitkamp may come to rue her high five with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) after her vote against a 20-week abortion ban

Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) all have narrow leads in their races (+3, +4, and +5, respectively). Sens. Bob Casey (D-PA) and Bill Nelson (D-FL) fare better (+8 and +10, respectively), but are not out of the woods quite yet.
