New Roadblock to McAuliffe’s 2020 Plans: He’s Being Sued by Chinese Investors

A group of Chinese investors just gave outgoing Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D-VA) 17 million more reasons his 2020 presidential ambitions may fall flat.

According to Politico, these investors are suing McAuliffe and Hillary Clinton’s brother, Anthony Rodham, for $17 million for fraud.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe and former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s brother Anthony Rodham are facing a $17 million fraud lawsuit from Chinese investors in Greentech Automotive, an electric car company that appears to be struggling to survive.

A group of 32 Chinese citizens filed the suit last week in Fairfax County, Virginia court, claiming that they were swindled out of about $560,000 apiece as a result of misrepresentations made by McAuliffe and Rodham—two of the most prominent and politically connected proponents of the venture aimed at manufacturing electric cars in the U.S.

If the suit goes forward, it could put McAuliffe in court for months or even years, complicating possible efforts to assemble a team and campaign early for a possible run at the 2020 Democratic nomination for president.

It’s been a month full of headaches for McAuliffe, who told a female MSNBC host to smile (as the country confronts charges of sexism and sexual harassment by powerful figures) and brushed off tough questions on the Donna Brazile scandal at the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which McAuliffe once ran.
