New Survey Could Spell Trouble for Justin Amash’s Reelection Chances

Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) drew national attention when he became the first Republican member of Congress to call for President Trump’s impeachment, but a new survey conducted by The Detroit News and WDIV-TV found this might have been a political miscalculation by Amash.

“President Trump has engaged in impeachable conduct,” Amash tweeted earlier this month after reading Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s redacted final report.

These comments by Amash caused State Rep. Jim Lower to announce that he would challenge Amash for the Republican nomination in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District in 2020.

The survey conducted by The Detroit News and WDIV-TV, which was released on Wednesday, found that there was little support for impeaching President Trump among Michigan voters.

The survey found that just 27 percent of likely Michigan voters support impeaching Trump, while “41 percent of respondents ‘strongly’ oppose impeachment.”

What might be worse for Amash is that “opposition to impeachment hearings was particularly high among independent voters at 59 percent.”

Only time will tell if Amash’s support for impeachment will come back to haunt him in the Republican primary, but this survey suggests it very well could.
