New York Democrat: Pelosi is ‘Aloof, Frenetic, and Misguided’

At least one House Democrat has had it with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s leadership of the House Democratic Caucus, according to a new report from the Buffalo News.

Rep. Brian Higgins (D-NY), who represents the Buffalo and Niagara Falls area of western New York, told the newspaper that he would not back Pelosi for another term as top Democrat in the House, blasting the 78-year-old San Francisco congresswoman as “aloof, frenetic, and misguided.”

“I will not support her,” Higgins said in an interview with The Buffalo News.

Higgins cited the lack of a clear Democratic agenda as an alternative to President Trump, as well as Pelosi’s lack of interest in his bills to expand Medicare and invest in infrastructure, as the key sources of his frustration.

“She’s listening, but this is my conclusion: She’s aloof, frenetic and misguided,” Higgins said.

To make matters worse for Pelosi, Higgins claimed he’s not alone. According to the congressman, “a significant number” of House Democrats share his sentiments but have not gone public with their concerns.

“I’m giving voice to a frustration that I hear every single day,” he said. “It’s members. I don’t want to call anybody out. But this is the conversation that is taking place.”

Higgins went on to call Pelosi and her leadership team “out of touch.”

He also criticized Democrats’ 2018 theme, “A Better Deal.”

“It’s thematic, it’s well-intentioned, but nobody’s buying it,” Higgins told the Buffalo News. “It’s Washington-speak.”

Similarly, he criticized Democrats preparedness for the 2020 elections.

“We are not ready for 2020,” Higgins said. “We’re lacking a clear, coherent and compelling narrative.”

And part of the reason, Higgins said, is that House Democrats lack a clear, coherent and compelling leader.

“When she’s on the floor, she’s all over the place; she’s frenetic,” Higgins said of Pelosi. “I think she lacks gravitas.”

Higgins’ district, New York’s 26th, is a safe Democrat seat, according to the Cook Political Report, which gives the district a D+11 rating. Higgins won in 2016 with 74.6 percent of the vote.
