New Yorkers to Gillibrand: Don’t Run for President

Empire State residents aren’t interested in their governor or New York City’s mayor running for the highest office in the land, either.

New Yorkers to Gillibrand: Don’t Run for President

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), widely seen as a likely presidential candidate in 2020, just got a bucket of cold water to the face from those who know her best.

A new poll released by Quinnipiac University on Wednesday showed that a vast majority of New York voters reject the idea of a Gillibrand candidacy.

When asked whether Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand should consider a 2020 campaign, voters said no by a 58-28 margin.

New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, is also rumored to have his eye on the White House, but voters similarly passed on that option. Fully 63 percent of respondents said Cuomo shouldn’t run for president, while just 28 percent said he should.

A top Cuomo aide is currently embroiled in a corruption trial that is steadily bringing down the governor’s approval rating in the state.

Gillibrand hasn’t been able to escape controversy, either. During an interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday evening, the New York senator called the views of Upstate New Yorkers about gun control and immigration “wrong” and “racist.”

The ironic part of Gillibrand’s attacks is that she used to hold the very same views, a fact she blamed on representing a “98-percent white” congressional district in the House earlier in her career.

Perhaps Gillibrand’s disdain for the very people she represents has something to do with those voters rejecting the idea of a Gillibrand 2020 candidacy?
