The National Football League (NFL) appears to have placed a league-wide gag order preventing public discussion on the league’s controversial national anthem policy.

Last week, a Texas publication reported the NFL had told Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones that he could no longer discuss the league’s national anthem policy.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported:

“Jones informed several local television stations who had booked him for interviews on their Sunday night show from training camp in Oxnard, Calif., that questions about the national anthem and his team’s policy were not permitted because the NFL had told him to stop speaking on the matter.”

Well, it appears that this is a league-wide gag order, not one limited to just Jones.

During an interview with ESPN on Sunday, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was asked about the league’s national anthem policy, and whether he could provide an update as to where things stand on the issue.

“Well, um, we have a gag order and I have to use my free cash for player signing bonuses right now,” Kraft said.

A gag order is “a judicial ruling barring public disclosure or discussion (as by the press) of information related to a case.”

But, Kraft did express his support for the ongoing talks between the NFL and NFLPA about the policy.
