NFL Player Says Anthem Protesters Are Like 9/11 First Responders

"I think it's the quality of what people went through when they were trying to rescue lives, it's the same thing that we are trying to fight for," Devin McCourty said.

Devin McCourty, who plays free safety for the New England Patriots, compared NFL players who protest the national anthem to the first responders of the September 11th terrorist attacks during an interview on Tuesday.

MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell asked McCourty if he had a message for President Trump and other Americans who oppose NFL players protesting the national anthem.

“I think listen,” McCourty said. “To actually listen to us and see what we’re talking about. We’ve had opportunities to talk to some of those servicemen, and they said that’s what they fought for.”

“So, I think [on] a day like today where we’re talking about 9/11 everywhere, you know, I think it’s the quality of what people went through when they were trying to rescue lives, it’s the same thing that we are trying to fight for,” McCourty added.

McCourty also noted that NFL players will be discussing the cash bail system in the United States this September.
