North Korea Cancels Annual Anti-American Rally

North Korea reportedly canceled its annual anti-American rally in Pyongyang, weeks after President Trump met with North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong-un.

According to The Associated Press, the annual demonstration marks the anniversary of the beginning of the Korean War, when thousands of North Koreans typically take to the streets to speak against U.S. “imperialism.”

The AP noted that this year’s Pyongyang is much different from last year’s:

Last year’s event was held in Kim Il Sung Square with a reported 100,000 people attending. North Korea even issued special anti-U.S. postage stamps.

Officials had no on-the-record comment on the decision not to hold the event this year. But Associated Press staff in the North Korean capital confirmed Monday that it would not be held.

North Korea has noticeably toned down its anti-Washington rhetoric over the past several months to create a more conciliatory atmosphere for the summit and avoid souring attempts by both sides to reduce tensions and increase dialogue.

It’s not clear what, if any, concrete steps the North Koreans are taking to eliminate their nuclear program after promises made at the Trump-Kim Singapore summit.

But the de-escalation of anti-American rhetoric will be a welcome sign in Washington, after a year of tensions that threatened at times to boil over to open war.
