Northam Yearbook Investigation Finds ‘No Error’ in Photo Placement

Gov. Ralph Northam (D-VA), best known for the racist photo that appeared on his medical school yearbook page, is back in the spotlight Wednesday after an independent investigation found that the photo was not placed on his page in error.

Eastern Virginia Medical School retained the law firm McGuireWoods to conduct an independent investigation to determine the source of the photo, how it appeared on Northam’s page if by other means than Northam himself, and the identity of those in the photo.

While the report did not answer all of those questions, it did determine that the photo was not placed on Northam’s page in error.

The report found no one “with first-hand knowledge of an actual mistake on any page, including any personal page, within the 1984 yearbook” and no evidence that the photo was placed in error. The report also identified 10 photographs depicting individuals in blackface based on the law firm’s review of all EVMS yearbooks.

McGuireWoods spent four months investigating the yearbook photo controversy, and the firm delivered a 55-page report to Eastern Virginia Medical School. After speaking with members of the 1984 yearbook staff and former students, the law firm reporter that “[N]o one we spoke with identified an actual mistake in the 1984 yearbook – or any other yearbook – in which a photograph appeared on a student’s personal page that the student did not submit.”

A former student who spoke to McGuireWoods said he perused the yearbook with Northam, but “did not recall the Governor having any reaction to the photographs on his personal page that would suggest the Governor thought there was an error on his page. He did remember discussing the photograph featuring the car on Governor Northam’s page.”

That student did say, however, that it is his personal belief that Northam is not in the photo. Northam denied having a conversation with this student and said he could not recall reviewing the yearbook prior to graduation.
