Nuclear Update: Trump Tweets on ‘Powerful’ Button, as North and South Korea Talk

President Trump jolted political and foreign policy observers on Tuesday night with a strongly-worded tweet about his “powerful” nuclear button, a direct response to the latest provocation from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

Kim had threatened the U.S. with a warning about his ‘nuclear button’ in a New Year’s Day address.

Trump’s tweet is also a departure from his tone on Tuesday morning, when he said “[p]erhaps” Kim’s decision to open talks with South Korea “is good news,” and “perhaps not.”

Indeed, North and South Korea took a step toward peace talks on Wednesday morning local time, when Kim “ordered the reopening of [a North-South] hotline at the truce village of Panmunjom.”

North Korea reopened a long-closed border hotline with South Korea on Wednesday, hours after U.S. President Donald Trump appeared to mock the North’s leader by saying he has a “bigger and more powerful” nuclear button than he does.

The North’s decision to open the border phone line came a day after South Korea proposed high-level discussions amid a tense standoff over North Korea’s missile and nuclear programs.

Can the U.S. and North Korea also step back from the brink? Time, or the president’s Twitter feed, may tell.
