NV Dem, Sexual Harasser Kihuen Not Running for Re-Election; DCCC Brags About ‘Track Record’

Rep. Ruben Kihuen (D-NV), once a rising star in the Democratic Party, announced over the weekend he will not run for re-election in his Nevada congressional district, following multiple allegations of sexual harassment and assault.

From Politico:

“I want to state clearly again that I deny the allegations in question,” Kihuen said in a statement. “However, the allegations that have surfaced would be a distraction from a fair and thorough discussion of the issues in a reelection campaign. Therefore, it is in the best interests of my family and my constituents to complete my term in Congress and not seek reelection.”

Kihuen had initially defied calls for him to resign in the wake of allegations his sexual overtures led a staffer to leave Kihuen’s campaign. However, last week the Nevada Independent released allegations from another woman who said Kihuen constantly hounded her over the course of several years in the Silver State.

Kihuen’s colleague Rep. Jacky Rosen (D-NV), who is running for U.S. Senate in 2018, seemed just fine with Kihuen’s announcement, even after she called on him to resign.

“While I’ve called on him to resign, I’m glad for the sake of his constituents that he’s made the decision to cooperate with the ethics investigation process and not to seek re-election next year,” [Rosen] said.

What’s worse, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) fired their opening volley in the open-seat effort by actually bragging about their “proven track record of winning open seats in Nevada.”

Of course, one of those open seats was filled by a sexual harasser, but maybe the DCCC will do a better job of candidate recruitment in 2018.

It’s likely to be a tight race, though. Kihuen beat Republican Cresent Hardy by only three percentage points in 2016.
