New York Times’ reporter Jim Tankersley published a story that claimed white Americans have benefited the most from the Republican tax cuts on Thursday, despite citing a study and including a graphic that showed Asian Americans as the demographic group that has benefited the most from the Republican tax cuts.

“The tax cuts that President Trump signed into law last year are disproportionately helping white Americans over African-Americans and Latinos,” Tankersley wrote.

Tankersley was reporting on a new analysis “by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, a liberal think tank, and released in a joint report with Prosperity Now, a nonprofit focused on helping low-income Americans attain wealth and financial stability.”

Tankersley’s reporting largely focused on the discrepancy between the benefits white Americans have seen because of the Republican tax cuts compared to Latino Americans and African Americans.

The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy report that Tankersley cites, however, found that Asian-Americans are benefiting the most from the GOP tax cuts.

Tankersley eventually does report this fact, but not until nearly halfway through the 932-word article. “The study found that the group getting the highest average cut was Asian-Americans, who have the highest average income of any of the groups.”

Below that is a graphic that shows how tax cuts have benefited Asian-Americans more than another group.

Tankersley’s article, which is titled, “White Americans Gain the Most From Trump’s Tax Cuts, Report Finds,” is extremely misleading.
