Reason, a libertarian online magazine, obtained access to an off-the-record speech former President Obama delivered at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In his speech, Obama bragged about his White House’s commitment to women, scolding society for its marginalization of one sex.

“We didn’t have a scandal that embarrassed us,” the former president told the MIT crowd. “Generally speaking, you didn’t hear about a lot of drama inside our White House.”

And the president criticized sexism in the workplace, calling for fairer treatment for women:

Obama didn’t comment on the #MeToo movement specifically, but he did stress that it should be a top priority for companies to make women feel safe and respected at work, give them equal pay for equal work, and make an effort to actually listen to what they are saying. If women are afraid to speak up, or are talked over by men, a good boss should call on them and ask their opinions.

But inside accounts from Obama’s White House paint a different picture of gender equality than his words. For instance, Anita Dunn, the then-president’s communications director, called his administration a “hostile workplace” in a book on the Obama era:

One of the most striking quotes in the book came from former White House communications director Anita Dunn , who was quoted as saying that, “this place would be in court for a hostile workplace. . . . Because it actually fit all of the classic legal requirements for a genuinely hostile workplace to women.”

Dunn clarified that Obama himself did not treat women with direct disrespect, but other women in the administration “complained directly to the president that men enjoyed greater access to him and often muscled them out of key policy discussions,” according to The Washington Post.

And a tell-all account from one of the speechwriting staff, David Litt, describes an environment at the Obama White House where men used their positions to pick up women:

As far as the dating scene in Washington, Litt describes, seduction was ‘almost painfully easy,’ as colleagues used their White House credentials to pick up women.

‘There was the winter, for example, when a blond local newscaster caught the eye of a co-worker. (I’ll call him Chase, because that’s what he enjoyed),’ he writes.

‘Chase’ pursued the news anchor by inviting her to holiday receptions and sports teams visits to the White House.

‘Each time she arrived…he’d charm her for a few minutes, drop a couple of names, and then apologize for being so busy he couldn’t stay.

‘It was almost too easy. After sealing the deal, Chase bragged about his conquest, but anyone could tell he was just going through the motions.’

A group known as the “Obama bros” made a name for themselves as testosterone-fueled operatives. The male staffers got in trouble for inappropriate behavior during the administration.
