Former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Thursday that he did, in fact, expand the Department of Homeland Security’s capabilities to detain families who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally during his time in the Obama administration.

Johnson warned that strict border policies decrease crossings in the short-term, but the number of illegal border crossings always returns to normal in the long term.

“In 2014, to deal with the spike then with the families, we did a number of things,” Johnson said, mentioning the Obama administration worked with Mexico. “We also expanded family detention, which was, I freely admit, controversial.”

Mitchell pointed out that the Obama administration “got a lot of heat for this.”

The former DHS secretary explained that they worked to expand the number of beds available in detention facilities.
