Obama Fundraiser for McCaskill Highlights Her Long-Time Obama Ties

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) is receiving some big-time help for her 2018 reelection campaign, and in Hollywood no less.

Politico scooped on Tuesday:

Former President Barack Obama will appear at a Beverly Hills fundraiser for Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) in May, according to an invitation obtained by POLITICO — a sign Obama is edging into the midterm elections.

Obama is listed as a special guest at the May 6 fundraiser hosted by the actress Katie McGrath, film studio executive Jeffrey Katzenberg, filmmaker Steven Spielberg and others Los Angeles-area heavyweights. This is his first post-presidential fundraising event for an individual candidate — and it goes to the female senator who very notably backed him early over Hillary Clinton in 2008.

The high-wattage event is certain to help McCaskill raise big money for her November election. But the political impact of the fundraiser may be to highlight McCaskill’s long-time ties to national Democrats like Obama.

  • McCaskill endorsed Obama in January 2008, when he was still in a tough fight with Hillary Clinton for the Democratic Party nomination
  • Both facing reelection battles in 2012, McCaskill “unabashedly hitched herself to Obama”; despite Obama losing Missouri to Mitt Romney, the controversial comments of McCaskill’s Republican opponent helped deliver her to victory
  • According to CQ, McCaskill voted with Obama 90 percent of the time or more in seven of Obama’s eight years (in 2009, McCaskill voted with Obama 80 percent of the time)

It appears Obama is rewarding McCaskill’s loyalty to him. Whether Missouri voters will reward McCaskill’s loyalty to Obama is another question.
