Obama: If You Watch Fox News, You’re Living on a Different Planet

"If you watch Fox News, you are living on a different planet than you are if you listen to NPR," Obama told David Letterman.

Former President Barack Obama said that if you watch Fox News, you’re living on a different planet than those who get their news from other sources. The remarks came during an interview with David Letterman aired by Netflix on Friday.

Letterman presented Obama with two scenarios: is it more damaging to a Democracy if the head of government routinely criticizes the free press in that country or is it more damaging to have an outside entity influence election results?

“One of the biggest challenges we have to our democracy is the degree to which we don’t share a common baseline of facts,” Obama responded.

Obama then told a story about former Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY), who once told a colleague that he was entitled to his own opinion, but he was not entitled to his own facts.

“What the Russian’s exploited but it was already here, is we are operating in completely different information universes. If you watch Fox News, you are living on a different planet than you are if you listen to NPR,” Obama said.

During Obama’s presidency, his administration repeatedly battled with Fox News over what they considered to be biased coverage of the administration.

In 2009 Obama’s White House described Fox as “not a news network,” and chose to “exclude Fox from a round of interviews with the executive-pay czar Kenneth R. Feinberg.”

Then in 2013, reports indicated that the Obama administration secretly monitored Fox News reporter James Rosen.

CBS News reported on the monitoring of Rosen:

“In seeking a search warrant, the FBI called Fox News’ James Rosen a “criminal co-conspirator,” even though he isn’t charged with any crime.”

“These revelations have set off a firestorm of criticism from the left and right, CBS News’ Jan Crawford reports. For the first time ever, a presidential administration is treating news reporting like a crime, and a reporter like a criminal suspect.”

Now Democrats and members of the media are actively attempting to paint President Trump’s administration as one that historically violates the press’s First Amendment rights, but they would do well to remember how Obama treated the press, as well.
