Obama in 2016: Trump Doesn’t Have a ‘Magic Wand’ to Grow Economy

As President Trump's economy grows faster than 4 percent, even as it's already booming, the former president's 2016 words ring hollow.

President Obama, speaking amid Donald Trump’s domination of the Republican presidential field at a PBS town hall in 2016, mocked the then-candidate’s economic promises.

Responding to a question about jobs fleeing to Mexico and Trump’s promise to bring them back, Obama said he would not “advertise” for the candidate.

“[Trump] just says, ‘Well, I’m going to negotiate a better deal.’ Well, how exactly are you going to negotiate that? What magic wand do you have? And usually, the answer is he doesn’t have an answer,” Obama told the crowd.

The president said that people needed to adapt to the economy of the future, because “some of those jobs of the past are just not going to come back.”

But under President Trump, GDP growth hit the four-percent mark in the second quarter of 2018, even as the economy has already been booming.

The manufacturing sector, in particular, is reaping the benefits of the current economy, adding hundreds of thousands of jobs so far this year.

Combined with the start of trade concessions from the European Union, the Friday economic news means that Trump may just have that “magic wand.”
