Obama Suggests the Democratic Party Might Not Reflect His Values in the Future

"In the United States, there was a time where I might have been Republican."

Former President Barack Obama suggested the possibility that the Democratic Party might not reflect his values in the future and admitted that there was a time in which he might have been a Republican during a town hall in Johannesburg, South Africa on Wednesday.

A participant at the town hall asked Obama how he decided which political party he wanted to join.

Obama explained how, in the United States, “it’s very much winner-take-all and as a consequence what’s evolved is essentially a two-party system.”

“I don’t think anybody is born with a party label,” Obama said. “For me, the question was: given the values that I believe in, given the vision of the kind of world I want to create, which of the two parties at the particular point in time best reflected those values and that vision?”

“In the United States, there was a time where I might have been Republican because Abraham Lincoln was a Republican, and at that time, it was the Republican Party that was opposing the expansion of slavery in the United States,” Obama said.

Obama then told the crowd that today it’s the Democratic Party that more accurately reflects his values.

“That doesn’t necessarily mean that will always be the case. It doesn’t mean in every instance I’ve agreed with the Democratic Party platform,” Obama said.

Since the 2016 election, the Democratic Party has started to adopt extreme positions, and the head of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) even called a 28-year-old democratic socialist the future of the Democratic Party.
