Former President Barack Obama is set to campaign for Richard Cordray, the Democratic nominee for governor of Ohio, on Thursday despite reports that Cordray funneled over $43 million in taxpayer funds to his campaign’s media firm.

The Associated Press reported on Thursday that while Cordray was the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), he granted a government contract to the Washington, D.C.-based advertising and media firm, GMMB.

According to the Associated Press:

“The Office of Inspector General reported in June that costs tied to GMMB’s contract with the consumer bureau grew from the original estimated value of $11.5 million to $43.8 million from August 2013 to February 2018. The office found the bureau could have better managed the contract and urged stronger controls.”

Now Cordray’s campaign is using the same GMMB to make Ohio ad buys, according to records reviewed by The Associated Press.

Cordray’s campaign told the Associated Press that “there’s nothing improper about the firm’s work for the government or the campaign.”

But the Republican Governors Association (RGA) blasted Cordray for, “engaging in a pay-to-play scheme with the Democrat ad firm.”

“Cordray’s continued use of GMMB for his gubernatorial campaign raises serious ethical questions and further shows that he can’t be trusted to lead Ohio,” the RGA said in a statement.
