Ocasio-Cortez ‘Already Making Enemies’ Among Hill Democrats

Her unwillingness to play by the traditional rules, outsized megaphone, and advocacy for primarying her colleagues is exasperating many House Democrats.

Well, that didn’t take long. After about one week on the job, freshman Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is already “making enemies in the House Democratic Caucus,” according to a new report from Politico.

Nearly 20 Hill Democrats and aides said they are eager to rein in Ocasio-Cortez, 29, whom they believe should be using her “star power” to attack only Republicans and never Democrats.

“I’m sure Ms. Cortez means well, but there’s almost an outstanding rule: Don’t attack your own people,” Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO), 74, told Politico. “We just don’t need sniping in our Democratic Caucus.”

Democrats’ biggest complaint with Ocasio-Cortez is her willingness to back primary opponents intent on taking down current members of Congress.

Incumbent Democrats are most annoyed by Ocasio-Cortez’s threat to back primary opponents against members of their ranks she deems too moderate. But their frustration goes beyond that: Democratic leaders are upset that she railed against their new set of House rules on Twitter the first week of the new Congress. Rank and file are peeved that there’s a grassroots movement to try to win her a top committee post they feel she doesn’t deserve.

One member of Congress whom Politico described as an Ocasio-Cortez ally said she “needs to decide: Does she want to be an effective legislator or just continue being a Twitter star?” Ouch.

The problem for Democrats is that Ocasio-Cortez is better known that virtually any other House Democrat, outside of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).

Many Democrats championed her primary upset in June of last year when she defeated a 10-term incumbent. But now those same Democrats are dealing with the fallout of an unchecked rising star who carries more weight among the grassroots than most of them combined.
