"Once we get elected to Congress, we don’t own these seats. We rent them from our communities."

Congresswoman-Elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) defended her ties to a liberal group that supports primary challenges of incumbent Democrats during an interview on Monday.

MSNBC’s Chris Hayes asked Ocasio-Cortez about her ties to a group called Justice Democrats, which supports primary challenges against incumbent Democrats, and whether it will make working with fellow Democrats awkward for Ocasio-Cortez.

The New York Post reported on Justice Democrats’ political goals on Monday:

“The group said it wants Democratic members of Congress to be representative of their diverse communities and support liberal policies like “Medicare for all,” abolishing ICE, and implementing a “Green New Deal” to fight climate change and eschew corporate PAC money.”

“Well, I think what’s important to articulate what Justice Democrats is about, is really it’s not – their mission isn’t ‘we’re going to primary Democrats,'” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Their mission is ‘we’re going to support working class candidates to run in midterm elections,’ and – so they have supported and endorsed candidates in red-to-blues, in open primaries, but they do not shy away from actual primaries and blue races, either.”

Ocasio-Cortez continued: “I don’t think it’s a departure from precedent at all, but I also think that we need to realize, at least for me and what I tell my community, is that we don’t – once we get elected to Congress, we don’t own these seats. We rent them from our communities. And we have to make our case every single time.”

“I’m saying this to you as an incumbent-to-be, and I realize that that means that I hold myself to that standard as well, but I think it makes our democracy healthy,” Ocasio-Cortez concluded.
