Ocasio-Cortez & Markey Set to Unveil Green New Deal as Early as Next Week

Liberal rising star Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is teaming up with New England septuagenarian Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) to unveil a legislative package designed to completely upend the U.S. economy.

It’s a policy proposal Ocasio-Cortez ran on as a candidate in 2018 called the Green New Deal. “The Green New Deal is a set of vague, but broad progressive policy goals seeking to transform the economy in the name of fighting climate change,” according to Axios’s Amy Harder. “It has risen from obscurity to prominence since the November election, with Ocasio-Cortez, a rising progressive star, leading the charge.”

So what is it, exactly? Nobody knows for sure, and the legislation is likely not to be released until next week at the earliest.

But Harder dug up a few clues from Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign website and a policy document that has been “circulating” in D.C. According to that document, the legislation seeks to accomplish the following within 10 years:

– Dramatically expand existing renewable power sources and deploy new production capacity with the goal of meeting 100% of national power demand through renewable sources;

– building a national, energy-efficient, “smart” grid;

– upgrading every residential and industrial building for state-of-the-art energy efficiency, comfort and safety;

– eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from the manufacturing, agricultural and other industries, including by investing in local-scale agriculture in communities across the country;

– eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from, repairing and improving transportation and other infrastructure, and upgrading water infrastructure to ensure universal access to clean water;

– funding massive investment in the drawdown of greenhouse gases;

– making “green” technology, industry, expertise, products and services a major export of the United States, with the aim of becoming the undisputed international leader in helping other countries transition to completely greenhouse gas neutral economies and bringing about a global Green New Deal.

Despite the plan’s accelerated ambition, “[i]t’s light on details on how that would be funded,” per Harder, and includes no mention of putting a price on carbon dioxide emissions.
