Omar Rakes in Massive Fundraising Haul Amid Anti-Semitic Remarks

Controversial Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) reported raising more than $800,000 in the first quarter of 2019, an impressive sum that outpaced most of her Democratic House colleagues.

Omar managed to rake in the big bucks, $822,932 to be exact, while simultaneously courting controversy on a regular basis. In February, she tweeted an anti-Semitic trope that drew the scorn of her fellow Democratic colleagues and the press. A few weeks later, she doubled down on her anti-Semitism, arguing that Jewish Americans have a dual loyalty to the U.S. and Israel.

But while her often outrageously comments drew headlines, she was cashing donation checks:

In a FEC filing released Monday, Omar’s campaign reported a massive haul of $826,932.96 after some donations were refunded, reflecting a jump in individual contributions that eclipsed Omar’s total from the last fundraising cycle, which sat at just $40,829.80.

Omar’s office did not immediately return a request for comment from The Hill. Politico reported that about half of her donations, $415,000, came from contributions under $200 while about $631,000 came from donors using the ActBlue platform to raise money.

Earlier this month a video surfaced showing Omar describing the terrorist attacks from 9/11 in which nearly 3,000 Americans died as an incident in which “some people did something,” downplaying the tragedy at a fundraiser for the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

We won’t know how much Omar raised from these controversial remarks until mid-June when the second quarter reports are due.
