Omar Responds to Trump Immigration Plan by Calling for ICE to be Abolished

Controversial Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) took to the streets of Washington, D.C. following President Trump’s immigration announcement Thursday to insist the president immediately abolish the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency and provide a pathway to citizenship for those individuals residing in the U.S. illegally.

“So what are we asking for?” asked those few assembled at Washington’s Columbus Circle. “What we’re asking for is very simple. We need to make sure that we cut, and not put increases on spending on detention facilities. We need to stop using DHS as a slush fund.”

“We need to abolish ICE and end all inhumane deportation and detention programs,” she added. “We need to fight back against the criminalization of immigrants and those crossing the border. We need to create a fair and accessible path to legal status and citizenship for all undocumented people in the United States.”

Omar’s pleas will no doubt fall on deaf ears, not least of all because Trump had just announced that his plan – to focus on granting visas based on merit rather than familial connections – has absolutely no overlap with her requests.

Omar criticized Trump for not addressing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, an Obama-era policy that the Trump campaign brought to a halt in 2017.
