On Eve of Presidential Announcement, Biden Continues to Lead National Polls

Former Vice President Joe Biden is widely expected to finally launch his presidential campaign on Thursday, but on the eve of that announcement, a new poll shows he’s sitting in a commanding spot in the Democratic presidential primary.

According to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll released Wednesday, Biden leads the field with 24 percent support. Second place, a distant 9 points back, is Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). No other candidate received more than 7 percent and a full 21 percent admitted they did not yet know which candidate they would support.

Biden, Sanders, and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN) are among the candidates viewed most favorably by voters:

Sixty-three percent of all Americans say they have a “favorable” impression of Biden, including 88 percent of Democrats, 59 percent of independents and 39 percent of Republicans.

In comparison, 58 percent of Americans said they have a favorable view of Sanders and Pete Buttigieg, the 37-year-old mayor of South Bend, Indiana, whose upstart campaign has out-raised some of his more established rivals this year.

Biden’s strongest pockets of support were among older voters and minorities. “Thirty-two percent of adults who are 55 years old and older said they would vote for Biden over other candidates,” according to Reuters’ Chris Kahn. “And 30 percent of non-white adults, including about 4 in 10 African-Americans, said they would back Biden for the nomination.”
