One 2020 Hopeful Just Told a Pretty Big Lie

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) issued a statement calling on California Governor Jerry Brown (D-CA) to allow DNA testing in the Kevin Cooper case, and falsely touted her supposed “fierce opposition to the death penalty” on Friday.

While serving as California’s Attorney General, Harris refused to “allow this advanced DNA testing” in the Cooper case while also defending the state’s death penalty.

The New York Times’ Nicholas Kristof recently highlighted the Cooper case:

“This is the story of a broken justice system. It appears that an innocent man was framed by sheriff’s deputies and is on death row in part because of dishonest cops, sensational media coverage and flawed political leaders — including Democrats like Brown and Kamala Harris, the state attorney general before becoming a U.S. senator, who refused to allow newly available DNA testing for a black man convicted of hacking to death a beautiful white family and young neighbor.”

According to Kristof, “as state attorney general, Kamala Harris refused to allow this advanced DNA testing and showed no interest in the case.”

Harris did not initially provide comment for Kristof’s article, but then issued the following statement regarding the Kevin Cooper case:

“My career as a prosecutor was marked by fierce opposition to the death penalty while still upholding the law and a commitment to fixing a broken criminal justice system. I’ve long been an advocate for measures to improve and make our system more fair and just.”

“As a firm believer in DNA testing, I hope the governor and the state will allow for such testing in the case of Kevin Cooper.”

However, in 2014 while serving as California’s Attorney General Harris defended the “constitutionality of the state’s death penalty.”

NBC Sacramento reported:

“Attorney General Kamala Harris on Monday urged the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to overturn a lower court decision invalidating the state’s death penalty.”

“Harris argued that ‘It takes time’ to execute a death row inmate because of legal procedures and protections they invoke.”

Harris’ statement on Friday wasn’t only a major flip-flop, it was also a flat-out lie for the 2020 hopeful to claim she fiercely opposed the death penalty.
