One Day After Liberal Group Attacks Him, Trump Tweets Support for Pete Sessions

Liberal special interest group Patients for Affordable Drugs Action, a super PAC funded by liberal billionaires Laura and John Arnold, announced Tuesday it was launching an attack ad campaign against Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX).

The group said it’s spending $250,000 to attack Sessions with digital and mail ads. Their stated reason for going after Sessions is because they claim he’s too close to the pharmaceutical industry, but a closer look at their tactics reveals that they’re targeting Republicans they believe are vulnerable in 2018.

Patients for Affordable Drugs’ digital ad features a woman named Lora, a Texas resident who says she voted for President Trump but can’t support Sessions.

The president complicated that messaging on Wednesday by tweeting his full-throated support for Sessions. He called Sessions strong on crime, the border, the military, veterans, and the Second Amendment. It’s not clear whether Trump’s move is a direct response to the group’s tactics, or just a coincidence.

Sessions faces Democrat Colin Allred in November, in what many expect to be a close race. In 2016, Sessions’ district went for Hillary Clinton by three percentage points.

Patients for Affordable Drugs is also attacking Rep. Bruce Poliquin (R-ME) and Bob Hugin, the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate in New Jersey, this cycle.
